July 29, 2021 – 8:00-10:00PM ICT The Biorisk Management SORT project in Vietnam facilitated by the Institute of Environmental Health and Sustainable Development in collaboration with the Viet Nam One Health University Network, Sandia National Laboratories, and the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), engaged with implementing partners in Thai Nguyen province including: Thai Nguyen Center for Disease Control, Thai Nguyen Sub Department of Veterinary, Husbandry and Fishery, Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry held its third virtual session on July 29, 2021.

December 27 has been approved by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness, starting from 2020. Originating from the end of December, 2019 from Wuhan, China, the COVID-19 epidemic- 19 with the agent SARS-CoV-2 has become a global pandemic.

On the Xmas days of the a “special” year 2020, from December 22-26, the Training course titled Biorisk Management curriculum development for Military Medical University was held in Cat Ba Island, Hai Phong city under the coordination of the Institute of Environmental Health and Sustainable Development (IEHSD).

The biological surveillance and early detection of biological incidents to address emerging infectious diseases in Vietnam and also in Southeast Asia are limited, and this poses numerous complex long-term challenges to the Southeast Asia community. Especially, the limitation of practical knowledge and exercises for health care workers and medical students in biosafety practices in laboratories could lead to the low capacity to take surge actions in management and control of future pandemics.

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency Biological Threat Reduction Program (DTRA BTRP) Ministry of Health General Department of Preventive Medicine (MoH GDPM), Ministry of Agriculture Rural Development Department of Animal Health (MARD DAH), and Vietnam One Health University Network (VOHUN) share a common goal building capacity to manage, operate, and sustain biologically safe and secure laboratory operations throughout the country, biological research, disease management, and enhanced global disease surveillance systems for early pathogen detection and response.
