Training Session #3 – BRM Student Outbreak Response Team (SORT)

The Biorisk Management SORT project in Vietnam facilitated by the Institute of Environmental Health and Sustainable Development in collaboration with the Viet Nam One Health University Network, Sandia National Laboratories, and the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), engaged with implementing partners in Thai Nguyen province including: Thai Nguyen Center for Disease Control, Thai Nguyen Sub Department of Veterinary, Husbandry and Fishery, Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry held its third virtual session on July 29, 2021. This was the third of six training sessions and is expected to be completed by August 30, 2021. The session began with a presentation from Dr. Nguyen Thi To Uyen, who is the Deputy Head of Public Health Department within Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy. She presented on the importance of risk communication and community engagement in outbreak response activities. She highlighted the pillars, principals, and processes that are critical in risk communication as well as the experience and best practices in community engagement. Dr. Nguyen created an opportunity to engage with students by presenting a scenario and asking them to identify the missing principles within the scenario for their analysis.

The next presenter was Dr. Hoang Thi Hai Van, the Head of Global Health Department within the Institute of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and Hanoi Medical University. She presented on the measures that are being taken to prevent SARS-CoV-2. She first discussed the need to identify the modes of transmission of the disease in order to know how to prevent it. After, she spoke about the practices that each individual can implement to prevent themselves on an individual level, such as hand washing and social distancing. Then, she spoke concerning the need for vaccination and contact tracing efforts to prevent the spread of the virus on a community and organization level.

After the presentations, there was time for questions and responses from the participants to the presenters. During this time, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Deputy Head of Infectious disease control Division, Thai Nguyen CDC requested for support from SORT team in Thai Nguyen to join the vaccine campaign that will be held at their local CDC starting from August 1, 2021. The SORT will be mobilized to support remotely with data inputs for the vaccination program. This is a great opportunity for the SORT team to engage in their first community volunteer event. To close, Dr. Pham Duc Phuc, the director of the Institute of Environment Health and Sustainable Development and Coordinator of VOHUN, provided closing remarks.

The fourth SORT session will take place the week of August 8, 2021.
